Having led a transient military lifestyle for many years, Ed and Ellen never had a home to truly call their own. So when they finally gained the opportunity to build a permanent home, they had precise ideas as to what they wanted out of their main living spaces. They had always planned on retiring to a home that was comfortable, had plenty of space for entertaining guests and contained a private in-law suite for their parents. To Ellen, the kitchen is their primary living space. It is a place of both productivity and leisure, a gathering place for all occasions. “I tease my husband and say that we built the house around the kitchen,” Ellen says.

ed3To design this most important room, Ed and Ellen hired Eileen Riddle, CKD, of Kitchens by Eileen in Lititz. “We knew that we were only going to do this once, and we wanted to do it right,” Ellen says of the design and build process. “Eileen was very open to the vision of what I wanted and willing to work with me to make that vision a reality.” At the top of Ellen’s list of priorities was functionality and space. “Everyone wants a beautiful kitchen,” Ellen says, “but I need my kitchen to be smart and make sense.” Eileen Riddle created a functional living space that clearly reflected Ellen’s tastes. “A kitchen design is about more than cabinets on a wall—it’s about the feeling of comfort they should have as a result,” Eileen adds.

In choosing a builder, Ed and Ellen knew they had very specific needs and wants as well as a target budget. They felt very confident that Custom Home Group of Quarryville, could handle this challenge. Custom Home Group not only built a quality home for Ed and Ellen, but also guided them through the selection of color schemes, trim accents, tray ceiling details, exterior finishes, etc. Jared Erb, designer for Custom Home Group, asserts, “We take a holistic approach to design and construction. Our goal, as both a designer and builder, is to work closely with the homeowners throughout the construction process to effectively execute design details onsite.” This idea became very important to Ed and Ellen, especially in regard to the kitchen.

“I cannot think of anything I had to compromise,” Ellen says. “I have everything I wanted in my kitchen and more.” In the end, it was the teamwork approach by designers, builders and homeowners that made this project a complete success.
